Looking for some advice please. I have a 84 Johnson, new waterpump, just rebuilt fuel pump, new fuel line with bulb, plugs are new and clean, still running rough at idle and coughs out after running in water at low speed (after about 2 min). Runs great at high speed and appears to behave better when run out of the water.
I've owned the boat/engine for 4 year, and always have had to warm up for 5 min, or it would stall out. I've read other folks issues in this same space and tried lots of things (squeezing the bulb didn't help), replacing all the stuff above, etc. I'm ready to rebuilt the carbs (OMC kit 396701). My reason is: I opened the bowl drain on the top carb and let it drain on to a clean paper towel. I found a fair amount of silver slithers almost like very fine shavings. I suspect these could be from the needle valve. Anyone seen this before? Got any other tests for me to perform before I embark on the carb rebuild? Once last clue: I keep seeing gas accumulate in the air intake area (all 3 carbs) and spit from the manifold drain right after restarting. I don't think this normal
