Is there a way to put direct 12v to the trim motor to see if it moves or its frozen or just broke?

I check the wires and switch....everything tests good.

thanks

Yes, pull the connector apart and run 12v to blue, ground to green for UP; reverse that for DOWN.

Note: Not sure about the 2 wire motors, but the 3 wire can draw up to 44 amps going up. Careful where you pull the 12v from.

This diagram for a 2 wire system may also help you:

Yes, disconnect last connector going out to trim pump.

Blue and green wires left. apply +12 to one wire and ground to other wire - pump should function. reverse wires to check pump/travel in opposite direction.

Re: '84 John 75hp 2 wire trim motor question

did it straight to the battery. NOTHING.....
When I loosened the screw to relieve the pressure so the trim rods would go all the way in, they didn't. I put about 300 lbs on the back of the motor and they wouldn't move at all. I'm going to take the enrire unit off. Any ideas what makes them "stick?"

Give the tilt mtr a few light raps with a small hammer and see if it starts to work.

I banged and banged.....nada! It appears to be "frozen solid" and it's a fresh water motor.

If you have a stuck brush in the the mtr, some times a few raps will make it work. Guess you have internal mtr probs.

Don't worry about the trim rods not moving. The manual release allows the motor to move, but not within the trim range (1st 15 degrees). Take the motor off of the assembly and try to direct power it again to make sure that the problem is not a binding pump. If it still will not spin, then you can either replace the motor, or attempt to repair it.

I recently rehabbed my trim motor, and it works great now. When I removed the screws on mine, about a cup of water came pouring out. I had to resolder a wire to the brushes, but the brushes still had plenty life left, so I just left them in. A good cleaning of the armature and stator magnets was needed (use emory cloth). If you need to replace your brushes, find a starter shop in your area. I see that you're in Frisco. If you can't find a shop there, check out D.C. Starter Services in Denton. When I rebuilt my starter motor, got a set of brushes there for $12.

I'm including a few pics of the project. If you decide to fix your motor, let me know if you run into any problems.

Re: '84 John 75hp 2 wire trim motor question

I have it on the T/T unit on the bench. It was for sure the motor so I ordered one. The trim rods are stuck and i have removed almost every drop of fluid and have the fill and relief screws wide open. Shouldnt the rods go in?? Im confused.

The manual release valve allows fluid to move from 1 side of the tilt piston, to the other side of the tilt piston. It does not release the pressure on the trim rods. They will go down when you get that new motor on there and run it down.

I purchased an O-Ring kit and will take out all screws and replace the orings. Can I blow compressed air through it to "clean" any particles of dirt? Carb cleaner ok to use as well?

kryan2, are you referring to the trim cylinders?

Re: '84 John 75hp 2 wire trim motor question

the manifold itself has a few big screws.....once i loosened them the 2 trim rods went right in with a tiny bit of "hand pressure."

OK, you took off the trim check valve... that works too. As far as using compressed air or carb cleaner, I used neither. You may want to get another opinion on that.

I'd use neither also. Just make sure you're working in a good clean area.

Does a "trim check valve" go bad? Way to check?

Yes they do. Takes tool #390063. After looking at the pic, maybe you could improvise something. If you come up with something, I'd be interested to hear about it.

BTW, what are you going to do with the bad motor? I'm probably less than 10 miles from you, and I wouldn't mind taking a look at it (if the price is right).
