I've got this 40-hp Johnson that starts up, idles and purrs like a kitten. When I have it in the backyard (i.e., no load) with the ear muffs on the lower unit, I open the throttle (watch the carbs open up, etc.) and it screams.

Now, when I put it in the water, I open the throttle, and there is an initial burst and lunge forward, but then it kind of bogs down and acts as if the throttle is about half open or so. It doesn't stall or anything when I open it, just revs up, then cak down and stays there. If I keep the throttle at that position, every 5 min or so there might be a little surge in power, but that's it. Frustrating b/c I thought I had gotten this thing in good working order...

Any insight would be appreciated.

Also - one more thing - while running it with the ear muffs on, the impeller etc seemed to be working well - good flow out the pee hole there -and as I was working on it, didn't realize that the muffs had vibrated off of the intake. Noticed the engine really heat up. Looked dow, replaced the muffs - but now it doesn't pee so well, more like an occasional dribble. Running it though for an hour on the water after this though did not seem to cause it to overheat or anything so I tend to think somehow it is being cooled...?

Thanks a lot.
