84 Evinrude 9.9 update/help?

Hello, update I replaced the recoil spring and rope and this motor fired right up and is running pretty good. Couldn’t run it long because it wasn’t pumping water. Gonna put in another impeller.. My first question is the pictures that are shown is of the upper shift rod. I know that it has a curve in the rod. What is the specific direction the curve should be going? I’m having a little more trouble than usual putting lower unit back together. Thanks

The curve on the lower rod faces forward.----It slides together with the upper then.

thx, racerone after looking a little bit deeper, i noticed when my buddy and i went to put this back together one of us had put the brass coupler on backwards!! I think it should be fine now...I hope at least...
