84 85hp force no spark on 1 and 3

got a 84 bayliner with a 85hp force outboard. no spark on 1 & 3 coils test fine. checked by swapping hot to coils using spark tester. used ohm meter on trigger wires tested in spec 48-52 ohms. wondering what could be issue. rectifier? stator? cdis bad but both? thanks for the help i will post the fix unlike everyone else

Outboard ignition . com Has test procedures for that motor.
Sometimes the connectons can go bad, look good but be bad.
I remove all the connectors and replace with individgual connectors.
Your plug and go connectors were a bad idea and was replaced after only a few years.

cut out plugngo connectors replaced with high end spade connectors no spark still on 1 and 3. any other idea admiral?

i think i found the problem!! did a little tugging and inspection and look what came out

found burnt/loose wire on stator along with a bad cdi unit. blue wires went to cdi 1 which powers 1 & 2 hence spark on two. swapped know good power source to cdi 3 and got nothing. hence bad cdi unit. gonna try and upgrade entire electronic ignition system with newer model. (post plug n go connectors) plus hey ill get a lot of spare parts.:eagerness:

now the question i have is will a complete ingnition system off a 1990 90hp unit work on my 85 i beleive it will. i am taking about an entire electrionic system here coils cdi stator trigger solionoid ect. the whole harness

Yes it should work. All of the major components should swap right over. Just be prepared for some small gotcha's. It's hard to predict what you might run into when doing a swap like that.

I went one step further on my 1988 125HP motor. Replaced the Prestolite ignition system w/blue coils and CD units and installed a later model 1995 - 1998 Mercury CDM ignition system.

Much easier to trouble-shoot and CDM units are much cheaper than the Prestolite CD units/coils. A little more involved than what you're looking to do.
