While diagnosing a fuel problem ( you have to pull a couple plugs and put fuel in cylinder then it fires right up, carbs are getting fuel, I’m cleaning them now) I found this wire, it has no covering and is coming apart, it attaches to the underside of the flywheel, possibly the trigger assembly, if so tell me I don’t have to replace that whole part $$ :( it’s not the stator wires, advise please and how do you remove the flywheel, do I just need an impact or is there a way to keep the motor from turning over, and yes I know it has to go back on exactly where it came off, for the timing, I’m new to outboards but not engines in general, thanks again

Welcome to mid 80s mercury outboards. The wiring insulation started to fall apart after 15 years

New wire harness, and if you can use heat shrink to try to save the stator.

It must have been a long run (wire vendor) my 1975 85hp did the same thing.

That's the wires from the trigger. Looks like it's the WHT/BLK wires that is gone. I guess you might be able to strip the covering back far enough to expose a good part of that wire you could splice in a new piece of wire. Probably the best thing to do is to replace the trigger because if that one wire went bad the others may not be far behind. You would have to pull the flywheel to do that. May want to examine the wiring from the stator real close. It could be going too. In that case it might be a good idea to also replace the stator while you are in there.

Thanks for the replies, going to pull the fly wheel tomorrow, and see if there is any good wire under it so I can splice in a small piece while I order a new part, and continue working on the fuel problem
