i have recently bought an 84 evinrude 25hp. the first day i messed around with it i put new plugs and rebuilt the crab because it was sitting for a lil time. the first pull she was up and running like a champ.when i got some time i took it to the water a couple days later. first pull started right over and took her for a run had no problem ran like a raped ape. stopped after a while then went to start it again could not start it to save my life. finally got it home and started playing with it. my carb does not have an air filter on it it did not come with one i was also told that they run better with out it. i got to messing around with it and found that if i stuff a piece of filter material in it it will crank right over(sometimes with a little help from some starting fluid) then in order for it to run well i have to pull that material out and let it run open again and its like brand new runs great when in gear. but when i come back down to idle it conks out. then i have to go through the process again for it to start. maybe i just need to get the proper filter? not sure did not know if anyone had similar problems or had some suggestions thank you

I would pull it back off and clean it again. Spray it down good where the low speed idle jet is. Then check all rubber fuel lines. They could be old and in need of replacement. Ethonal gas plays havok with rubber hoses. Anyways that's how I's start with it.

Clean the carb properly. Strip it and soak in Gunk Parts and carb cleaner. Follow the directions. You will need compressed air to do the final blow out. Use a new repair kit. Remember the carb on a two stroke is the heart of it. If it is not working properly you will kill the motor.

Welcome aboard, bigman.
Good advise above. Use 50:1 fuel/oil mix. Never use starter fluid.
The filter (aka air silencer) was eliminated on the '82 model. Good luck.
