I have a 1984 200hp merc attached to my 19 foot bass boat. the thing sat for many years. I took it to the lake today and it started and idles good and ran ok up to about 1500 RPMs. when the throtle is pushed beyond this point the engine tends to stall. I can get it up to higher RPMs by hitting the choke a few times and it will finally catch and runs great at 3000rpms and up. It is the transistion that appears to be the issue. I know these things don't have an accelerator pump like a car but it acts like when a cars accelerator pump is bad. I looked over one carb and it was clean with no laquor in it. Any suggestions?

You stated the carbs looked clean did you examine the jets and the seats? If the motor had been sitting for an "extended period" you might have corrosion under the flywheel on your ignition system too.

Bob

It sounds like classic fuel starvation to me.Or a compression problem (not pulling in,or pumping fuel).
You have one or more carbs with a partially blocked jet or orafice. The fuel pump could have a holy diaphram,or crudola in the chack valves. But before tearing-into them, make sure there are zero air leaks in the fuel line and fittings allong with it.
An inline fuel filter would go far at keeping small debris out of the carbs and fuel pump (after you get her runnin good).

Thanks for the suggestions. Today I tore apart the carbs and found some junk is a few of the jets and orifices that may contribute to the problem. I also went through the timing sequence and set everything to factory specs. These also were a little off. Now I have to take it to the lake and see if it did any good. I'll let you know if what I did fixed the stall.
