I picked this up pretty cheap and I don't know a whole lot about it but Im pretty good at fixing things up. I need to find out first what prop size is best for a 16 foot tri-hull for all purposes. Fishing, tubing, and hopefully a little skiing. Second I need to find out if it should pee all the time or just at some of the higher rpm's it gets a pretty good stream going at 1/3 throttle (I have no tach) and continues through wide open. While idling of at low RPM's is will dribble a bit or come out in spurts. Is this a problem?
But on the subject of cooling, it sounds like the impeller is worn out,or the thermostat is corroded shut. The latter is more suspect if the engine sat for a long peroid of time without use..
Impellers wear-out quickly on most outboards and it should be replaced every 100hours or every two years, just as routine maintainance.
This is something that you don't want to fail out on the water.

I have a 1986 35hp mercury. at an idle it puts out a good stream of water at low idle.
It's a sign of a bad impeller for sure.

Markcv

Hi,
The one you have is better. The 13" should be to large and not let the engine rev-up.
...have fun...corm
