I have a 1983 Mariner 150 HP , V6 outboard serial 6424779 that I'm having some issues with.

Here's the rundown:
1. Bought the boat, previous owner said it ran great....... i know... that never happens
2. Determined 3 cylinders weren't getting spark and replaced three coils. Verified all cylinders getting good spark.
3. Started motor, determined water pump was bad
4. Replaced water pump, now pumps good, and idles great (little smokey)
5. Went to lake, here's where the problem occurs:

I started the motor and let it idle for ~5 minutes to get things going, idled just fine with no issues. Put boat in reverse to back off trailer, stalled (bogged down not instant stall). Restarted and tried to use the idle throttle (neutral) and throttle it up I'm able to apply gas for only a short while then it does the same exact thing and stalls out.

When it stalls it's not instant, it's also not a typical bogging down, very abnormal from my experience (all with smaller motors). For all intensive purposes the fuel tank and fuel has been tested and working in another boat, and the lower unit has new gear lube.

We looked at the screen in the fuel pump and it's completely clean, the large jets in the carb's are also completely clean, there wasn't a spec of anything in them certainly nothing that would cause this problem.

When it stalls out the ball remains hard, then the boat will immediately start back up without doing anything, and idle.

Usually I have the opposite problem where the motors won't idle but once you get going they work just fine.

What should my next steps be ? I don't have a whole lot of money to spend on just taking the thing to a repair shop... :(

Thank you for any assistance you can provide, I would genuinely appreciate a little help here, dying to get out on the water.

Fuel pump. $20 kit, 'bout an hour to throw it in.

There wasn't a fuel pump kit available here, or anywhere near hear so we carefully cleaned everything out, switched to a new gastank and line, double checked everything and had some success. This is what happens now...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFFu_PTjkl8 & http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOBXpJHs6D8

Does it still seem like the fuel pump is the issue? If so I'll order one online and begin the waiting game. Seems a lot like a spark issue to me, but all the plugs are firing well, 3 coils are new.

Is the fuel tank vent open?

Fuel pump rebuilt, the old diaphram looked to be in fairly good shape. Issue persists, there wasn't any gunk at all in the fuel pump. Replaced all the gaskets and the diaphram, spring mechinism was still in tact. Checked all lines are securley attached and clear of debris.

Well.... after more testing we conclude that one of the switcboxes is bad, we switched the wires between the two and the other set of pistons stop properly fireing. Even as is there is noticeable spark... but still.

New question is, if one of the switchboxes is bad, is it a good idea to replace only one ? I've read in several places that you should replace both if you replace one. Thoughts...

What is your definition of a noticeable spark? To jump the .030 gap under compression takes as much spark as it takes to jump 7/16" in open air. That's why we use one of these.

Im with John. Sounds like a fuel delivery issue. I have the exact same motor and had similar issues but mine turned out to be ignition related. your seems like it is fuel starved on top end. I'd take your carbs apart, do a thorough carb cleaning and rebuild on all three carbs. There is no idle mix screw on these so they are pretty fool proof. Have you tried pushing in the key to choke it while its acting up to see if it gets any better? Another thing is to run it with the airbox off, and while it is acting up spray some premix into the carbs one at a time to see if it truly is a fuel or spark issue. You have to be able to fully determine that it is one of the two before you start buying parts to rule them out. It can and will get very spendy that way.
