My outboard runs great and shifts into forward gear without any problems, just a click and is in gear. When I shift into reverse, it goes click click click, starting faster and then running down in frequency until it engages (engine rpm does not change). When running in reverse gear it has no problems at all. This seems like some sort of synchronizing problem (??). Any suggestions on where to go at this problem? This is more of an annoyance than a lack of functionality but I don't know if it will damage it over time. Also, I have finally gotten this motor running perfectly, otherwise, and it would be sweet to kill off this last problem. This motor is the BELCT type, if I recall correctly (not home right now to check it).
Thnx.

either cable adjustment at motor or a failing cable. when the cables get wear, they will pull very well (forward) but fail to push as far as they did (reverse)... disconnect the shift cable at the motor, and shift the motor manually. it should go right into reverse. if not have you have the lower unit off, the shift linkage may not be correct.
