That's a 1990 through 1994 dual exhaust lower unit with a Mercury designed water pump. It is better than the original on that engine.

Go to the mercury dealer and order the impeller. Take the pump with you because there may have been slight differences from year to year. The impeller is larger (taller) than earlier years and the drive key is Mercury, not woodruff. There should be a stainless cup inside the plastic housing.

That engine has an incorrect prop on it. The prop is a closed hub type for a single exhaust lower unit and while it will work, the engine will not develop its full power. Here is the an example of the open hub type prop you want to use. This one happens to be stainless but you can buy an aluminum one. You can buy them new here at iboats stores or used on the auctions.

The exhaust snout must be removed to drop the lower unit. Do you still have it?

Frank, if the exhaust snout is the piece that bolts to the unit right above the impeller than the answer is no, I don't have it and never did. What is the function of this part? Next chance I get I'll take the pump housing to merc and get the proper impeller and gaskets ordered.

So far this project has been a big lesson on what to look for BEFORE you buy

One of the main uses for that snout is it's also a Zinc anode.....(who's proud
of the rookie, now?)

Why not just re-use the impeller...........lol. Man, that thing was butchered
wasn't it?

The exhaust snout on your engine has two functions: It directs exhaust away from the propeller blades and also is adjustable from side to side to counter engine and prop torque. I have never tried running an engine without one but I have heard that it can be done.
I, however figure that it was there for a purpose and it is better to have it attached.

They almost never go bad and the way they are usually broken is by jamming something in between them and the prop while running. SO: It is quite possible to get one off a junker engine rather than buying new.

Ah, Money! While you are TECHNICALLY correct, and Chrysler/Force did make a few select models with the exhaust snout as an anode, ALL these lower units used a bolt on anode behind the prop. The snout was painted aluminum. In addition, as can be seen from the photos, this particular lower unit has the anodes bolted to the sides above the cavitation plate.

The rearward bolt on my exhaust snout vibrated loose once leaving it to flop side to side. It made a huge difference in steering, the boat seemed to have a mind of its own. I'm not sure how it would be driving without one!

I'm going through exactly the same thing you are JONRA...Carb adjustment, blown head gasket, destroyed water pump impeller, different lower unit. So this thread is not only helping you but me and others as well, so don't give up and good luck with your FORCE!

Impeller and gaskets arrived today! Next chance I get I'll be cleaning everything up and reinstalling the head and head gasket, impeller, and new plugs. When that will be is anyone's guess... Oh and Frank, I was able to find a snout on eBay for 10 bucks! Thanks for the info in that regard.

A quick question before I go about putting all of this back together: Is there any kind of sealer or adhesive or anything I need to apply to the gaskets before I install them, particularly the head gasket?

Ok, ran into a snag...

I got the new impeller in and was reattaching the lower unit to the leg. I was about eye level with the water intake and noticed some black pieces of debris in the intake port - it turned out to be what was left of the old impeller vanes. So I removed the gear housing cover to remove the junk and when I was bolting it back on, it snapped in half. It turned out to be a 100 dollar part on boats.net. I am wondering what the chances are of finding one used or if someone could point me to a different store that might have a better price..

The part number is 818074A 1. Thanks.

If its not a real structural piece, try epoxying it back together, or find a professional welder or else you will end up with a melted mess.

I guess its the gear housing I thought it was just the cover. It's the part that the water pump housing mounts to. It also covers the compartment with the oil in it.

And Mark maybe I will look into getting it fixed I didn't think of that.

Ok, another quick update and a quick question:

Today I reinstalled the head and head gasket, using the tightening pattern recommended for my engine and a torque wrench set at 19 ft-lbs. I lightly coated each of the bolts with some blue RTV because it was recommended in some other posts that I read. After reinstalling the head I put the new plugs in, and decided to turn (by hand) the flywheel just because. At this stage of the game I still have the lower unit disconnected, but the flywheel seemed to turn way too easily.

I am just curious, is this normal? Or did I make a mistake somewhere...

I can rotate the flywheel with one hand to give you an idea of how little force it takes.
