Re: 82 evinrude15 electric start problem

Is this a engine that originally had electric start and you're repairing it, or one that you're attempting to install a factory starter acessory kit, or are you rigging up a some sort of electric start unit from scratch such as having a starter, key switch ot push button, starter solenoid, and a assortment of wire?

We need to know exactly which you're doing.... something to go on. The starter has nothing to do with a coil.... what is this coil?

Re: 82 evinrude15 electric start problem

I just bought this engine and it has electric start. If it is factory or not, I don't know. How do I figure this out? Model # is E15RCNC if that helps. It also came off of a pontoon boat and I'm putting it on my Lil' fishing boat. When I bought it the guy said here are the wires for the electric start. I just dont know what to dowith them. And I thought that the spark plug wires came out of a coil.?.? Please help if at all possible or if more info is needed or if you could just tell me where to run the wires from

Reg....from the model number, the engine was originally a pull start. The starter was probably added later. We still need to know from where the wires are coming a if it has charging. You would do well to get yourself a manual that has wiring diagrams.

Could you tell us the color and size of the wires?

Re: 82 evinrude15 electric start problem

There are 3 wires(orange, orange with a blue stripe, and black)that go into some type of 3 prong "plug" which when I got it had 2 red and a black wire coming out of it. I'm assuming for his switch. I can't tell the gauge of the wire but, they're small maybe 16-18 gauge. I'm not sure about the charging question. What should I be looking for??

Reg....you have some kind of a home made wiring/starter set up that I can't even begin to explain. I think the best thing for you to do is to take the engine to a wrench and see if he can figure it out.

Do you see any kind of starter solenoid under the cowl?

Re: 82 evinrude15 electric start problem

The three prong wire setup you speak of has nothing to do with an electric starter.

Orange/Blue wire leads from the powerpack to the top cylinder coil. Orange wire from the powerpack to the bottom coil. Black leads to ground.

Scan to the bottom of this page for a service manual, or check with your local library to obtain a electrical wiring diagram for that engine. The model number indicates it is indeed a 1982 15hp Evinrude.
