I got this motor free for salvage as the long shaft extension housing was broken. I took it to a repair shop and got it fixed. It worked fine for one season, although it was hard shifting. Now, when I put it in neutral to start it is still in gear. I still have forward, neutral and reverse in the gear box, but apparently something has come loose or moved so that the neutral start switch is not in proper alignment with the transmission. I have lots of automotive experience but none with outboads. Where do I start with this?

Open up the oval tab on the side of the leg and check the shift linkage. The shift rod has to be connected properly to the coupler.

I removed the oval cover plate, it apppears that the two rods are securely connected. The actual neutral in the gear box is between the reverse position and the neutral position of the shift lever. When the lever drops in to the detent, the gears are in forward.

A manual would be helpful, if I could find one. Would the adjustment be in the area of the shift lever mechanism? Could there be a problem down in the gear case?

Are you sayint the shift rod needs shortened?
I think the gear case is fine,I believe your problem lies in the shift rod adjustment which is part 39 in that schematic/parts list.the method of adjustment would be found in a manual or maybe someone here eventually will see it and describe the method.
I also would like to know it! I have a motor to experiment on but just had surgery and cant get to it for awhile. look at the parts list and trial and error with part 39 and connecting parts may reveal itself??

Re: '82 25 hp Evinrude long shaft electric start shift problem

Thanks for your help, Looked at it again, the shift rod moves up as the lever goes forward, so actually the shift rod would need to be longer as the gears go from reverse thru neutral before the shift lever is in the neutral position. I wonder if the rod may be bent. Or if I could loosen the coupler (see Jaspers reply) and get enough adjustment there. Is there an access to the bottom of the shift rod? Rain is coming so am done until later.

On the coupler there is no adjustments its fixed.it's only there as a means to disconnect to drop the lower unit. I have read here of trying all sorts of tricks only to find a bent shift rod and a new shift rod fixed the problem. The shift rod has bends in it factory made, so knowing which bend is right and wrong gets to be a problem. The other post I stated, as above he just bought a new shift rod thinking as a last resort, that was it he didnt know it was bent the wrong way till a new one was side by side.
I at that time kept as here saying that shift adjustment # 39

I looked over the exploded drawing and parts list closely. I see #39 is called an Adj. lever & shaft. The drawing isn't any help as to how it works. I'll just have to mess with it next weekend.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. It is a simple adjustment. Here's how, for others reference. Remove the hood and the Exh. Hsg. Cover plate #13, move the Shift Lever #41 to the neutral position, where a small pin drops into the neutral notch on the Shift Actuator Cam #88. Then loosen the Adjusting Screw in the Shift Lever and the screw above it with a 5/16" socket. Using a large standard screwdriver on the top or bottom of the Shift Rod Coupling, lever the Shift Rod up or down until the gears are in neutral. Easily checked by turning the prop. Thighten the Adj. Screws and check to make sure everything is still in the right position before reassembling.

Thanks for the hard work! I have been looking at the schematic for weeks waiting for warmer weather and ice to GET OUT OF MY LIFE!! So I can go figure out the adjustment.I knew it had to adjust or it wouldn,t be labeled as ADJ. Lever. Now instead of experimenting I can follow yout instructions.Of which some here couldn,t do it and wondered if it was possible at all. again thanks
