81 Johnson 50hp lower unit?

81 Johnson 50hp 2cyl. Last week got fishing line in prop had to replace both seals. Took boat out running in open water boat quits restarts fine. wont go much over a idle. Replaced fuel pump. When in the water under load about mid to high speed makes a screach noise locks up? will restart runs good with no load. Give it some load makes screach noise and acts like it lock up the motor the noise comes from lower unit I think? any Help

If you replaced the seals you changed the oil correct?

The lower obviously shoudln't make any noise at all and if it is stalling your engine I would say you have amajor failure on your hands.

With the limited info it is really hard to say but it sounds almost like a bearing locked up if the noise is actually coming from the lower.

I woudl first drain the lower oil and report back what you find, if you have a handful of metal shavings it will be obvous, and don't
run the engine anymore till you figure this out, every time you start it you are causing more damage.

i believe your powerhead is locking up.
check the compression.

Yes I did change the oil in the lower unit. I will drain the oil and check. Could the prop be to tight? How tight should it be?

I drained the oil.Looked good put it in a clear pan.Could see no metal. Next i took a small magnet ran it up the lower drain plug nothing. Ran it down the upper drain hole and pulled it back out full of shavings. Bad day. Is this fixable or would it be cheaper to spend over a grand for a rebuilt?
