Can someone please tell me what size pistons that are in this motor? I have looked at the diagram and they have 3 or 4 different kinds. I'm thinking they are .020 O.S. which are unavailable if so where would you go from there? Could you use used ones or is that not a good idea? I have heard that these are pretty good motors, true or false. That's why i thought i would go ahead and get parts here and there this year to rebuild next year. Thanks for reading and thanks for your help.

Clean off the tops of the pistons real good ( don't scratch ) and you may find an oversize # on them. If not you'll have to mic the cyls.

The 1981 factory exploded parts diagrams for that year show standard, .020 and .030 pistons. The later crossflow parts diagrams show only standard and .030 oversize. These diagrams are confusing to most of us. Bombardier issues a Parts and Accessores catalog to all their dealers. That book lists pistons which may not be listed in their exploded parts diagrams. The standard 1981 piston is part number 393271 (5006658) and is sold without rings. The .020 over piston is 438997 (5006703) and is sold with rings. The .030 piston is 396588 (5006669) and is sold with rings. .040 pistons are 439001 and are sold with rings. I have indicated the latest (superceded) part numbers in brackets. The 439001 is stocked under that (same) part number.

You can get non OEM pistons from .010 to.064 oversize for that motor and some of the aftermarket pistons are now used/sold as OEM items..
