mine is a J140TLCI 1981 vintage with the 'push key to choke' mechanism.
i learned that the manual is wrong - it says for cold starts to lift the idle lever, turn the key and choke it. i think that is wrong - the engine will flood and you'll have an environmental hazard/disaster to get it started after puking out 1/3 gallon of gas. For a cold engine, just choke it, leave the lever down.
your 'remote control' has the center button you press in and then pump the throttle 1 or 2 times, then back to neutral, and then crank it. be ready to have to choke it again (pushing in the button) forward with throttle if its stumbling and needs more fuel.
the idle lever is for starting when the engine is warm, rather than choking with the throttle. just open it partially and crank.
i'd stay with the flat top resistor spark plugs you are already using (UL77V?) . the manual says to use the 90hp or 110 hp plug specs if you're say trolling alot.
in case you missed it, Racerone's point is that you arent supposed to put the gearcase in fwd or reverse unless the motor is running. the gears arent rotating and can't always mesh if you're shifting with the motor off.
