80 hp 79 merc OB

I'm just getting back into boating recently bought a boat with a 79 merc 80hp it runs good except it grinds and thumps going into gear and then you have to baby it to accelerate and it stalls a couple of two ort three times before it finally goes, when it gets going it runs fine, when you stop and then try to go you go through the same thing, every time. Anyone have any suggestions?

see a similiar post close to the top i just replied to. my 80hp mariner (1982) acted the same way and still sort of is. so now i am looking at fuel tanks which are older and the fuel pump itself. carbs are all rebuilt and set to spec, changed fuel lines and some rewiring to do as well. just have to start eliminating. easiest fix would be idle screw settings but would likely never be that simple LOL
