Trying to get a Mercury 1976 700 running I noticed the mercury swith is missing. Do I need to get one? It's not listed in the parts manual. I have no spark.

Do you have a s/n for your engine to confirm the year?

Here is the '77 switch, item 26.

It's a 77 Serial 4719543 if it will run without it I will not replace it. Just recieved the manual last week. I'm going through all the wiring. I replaced the stator but my have to replace the trigger. The trigger wire for cyl. 3&2 were switched. I'm getting a new multi meter today with the correct conducivity scales. The the insulation on the wires are in bad shape. Is is possible to get the complete wiring harness A-84-73204.

The wiring harness is $219 dollars, I may rewire and color code with a paint stick.

Barring refurbing your own, I think the only possibility is CDI with your own core supplied for them to re-build or exchange.

Here is the cross reference chart and when you see the letter "R" in front of the p/n, that indicates a core requirement

Here is the CDI site and you can have a look through their available Wiring Harnesses or even drop them a note.

Good for you, that is what I do. I even have a couple of external harnesses where I have cut the plug in half, extracted the pins and rebuilt from there.

Thanks, for your help Gerry. I retire March 23rd. and would like to get this thing running. It was 70 hear in MO yesterday so I'm getting anxious.

Good on you Ron, go for it! I am 5 years and my first heart attack behind you and I have never had so much fun as I am now.
Hope the same goes for you.

Yes the motor will run normally without the mercury switch. Its purpose is to disable the ignition when the engine trims/tilts up beyond the point where the prop could come out of the water. It's a safety thing.

As for the harness, I believe they are still available for about $100 from a select few places. I think OLDMERCS dot COM is one source.

And for the age of the NOS, you are probably buying built in corrosion.

Absolutely x2 on this. DO NOT BUY NEW OLD STOCK OR USED Mercury anything electrical/electronic from that 70's-80's vintage...the insulation compounds they used then literally break down into acids and corrode the wiring, just sitting on the shelf.

If I had $200+ to blow on a harness (instead of just making one myself) I would look at CDI.
