Thank you kindly for that info. When I bought the repair manual it’s supposed to include everything to tear down and rebuild this motor so I’m not sure why they wouldn’t include those bolts. I hate that book it also has you torque fuel pump bolts to 80 inch lbs which is pretty tight. So tight stripping is easy to do, I should know.

The manual shows tork values for 1/4"-20 around 80 in/lbs for several fasteners so I used that as a reference, you could go higher but I'm not sure. The reason the manuals don't have the values for those bolts is because you aren't supposed to take the flywheel apart, you use a puller to remove it whole.

I asked about the flywheel bolts yes. I also stated the manual calls for 80 inch pounds on fuel pump bolts. I actually stripped one out torquing it. It seemed tight for such small soft bolts. I understand about using a puller for the flywheel but it seemed logical to remove the 8 small bolts after turning clockwise to 0 TDC. I just wanted to be sure I have them tight enough with lock tight before I’m done done

As long as you have lock tite on them, they will stay tight. I just made them tight with one hand on a 3/8 drive socket. Put lock tite on the distributor pulley bolt as well, as they loosen and rattle.

Not sure what is eating Merc850, but removing those 8 bolts is a lot easier than pulling center flywheel, IMO, and handy for changing stator or even rebuilding motor. Re-timing the flywheel is real easy, as flywheel can only go on 360*/8 ways = 45*.

If you cannot tell the difference between 45* before or after TDC, and 0* TDC, you have other issues.

Thanks Chris. I was thinking I did something wrong and the hard part was I did not understand why they put 8 bolts on something you’re not supposed to take apart. As a technician it goes against everything I know. The manual not stating torque specs is just plain wrong too. I pity the man that try’s putting 100 ft pounds on those cause one could easily think the book wants them too

Sometimes there is confusion between bolts.-------They are referred to by the diameter and thread count / pitch.-----Not by the size of the hex head on them !

Lol so I tried the starting technique explained here and I just flooded it out. I can see a rainbow in my muff water. So how can I avoid this again? I’m letting it sit cause she won’t start now at all

Motors in good condition do not flood.----They fire right up using the above mentioned procedure.----Check your timing , double check the timing !

its Not timing it’s good and let’s not forget motor was running strong two days ago. I out in up position and covered due to rain. Today I decided to fire it with above method. I pumped bulb lifted lever up 75 percent pushed choke and cranked. It didn’t even try but I see fuel in the waste water going down my driveway. I removed plugs they were wet, I dried and checked for spark in each and I’m getting spark? It was running like a champ wtf

Worse I had my carb screws at one turn from seated. I reset them all to 1.5 and it fired up in a instant. I’m having a hell of a time with those

To start from cold:
Trim motor in fully so the fuel runs into the cylinders and not out the front of the carbs when you over prime it
Prime till the ball is hard then squeeze it hard to shoot extra fuel into the cylinders, you will feel it in the ball as it bypasses the needle valves in the carbs.
Fast idle lever all the way up with choke on and fire it.
Works like a charm for me.
Good luck!
