79 Evinrude 100hp rebuild

Im getting ready to start the re assembly of my power head. I had one bad cylinder, was able to clean it up at .020 and had the others lightly honed. New piston and rings for the bored cylinder and new gaskets, reusing everything else.

Any advice on installing the needle bearings and their cages? I bought needle bearing grease and was wondering if the grease is a bit tacky to help in the placement?

Any other advice or caution notes would be appreciated.

The vintage manuals used to refer to a needle bearing grease 378642 which would be applied to them during reassembly. Perhaps it was thought the grease would hold the roller bearings in place while torquing the cap. Later manuals suggest that a Johnson/Evinrude outboard lubricant be used during reassembly. As long as they are heavily oiled, you should be fine.

I did re-assemble with the needle bearing grease. It made it easy to keep everything in place. Ran it today on the water to find it now has less power than before the rebuild. Turns out 1 coil pack wasnt firing so now that the cylinder has compression (had non before) it was robbing power from the 3 that are producing.

I found a coil kit from sierra (18-5176) but from the pics the wiring looks different. Does anyone know the difference from OMC. Im only going with sierra cause I can get it local instead of loosing another week of prime striper fishing waiting for it from online.

Wasnt the coil after all, recheck all the electrical connections and one of the pins, at the connection coil/power pack, had shifted to outside the connector. Headed to the river now to catch some stripers!
