'79 100 Hp Johnson General info

I have been having a over heating problem with my motor, so I have started with replacing the thermostats. I am now in the middle of dropping down the gear case to replace the impeller, but I am having trouble getting the two cases to split. After reading a few posts, I think I need to undo the shift linkage? Also as I am new to outboards so, is there a good FAQ or tear down guide out there?

Disconnecting the shift rod is your issue, check out the following link for an exploded view of your gearcase/shiftrod.
