Im going to look a 78 skeeter with the above mentioned motor. The guy wants 2 grand for it,seems low to me.Isn't the engine alone (assuming its in good running condition) worth alot more.

no... that's a 140 horse engine... you can't get parts for them anymore.... It's worth about $500 in most markets in good condition.. I sometimes see them advertised for $1000 or more and they MIGHT sell at that price but only to someone who doesn't know that parts are nla

I have a '76 1150 115 hp on my V-20 but I paid $50 for it. and $175 for a junk boat with a trailer and a second 1150 for spare parts.

Parts for these motors are available all over. You can start out in the mercury/mariner forum if you need anything for the merc.Yes they go for 500-1200 depending on condition, power tilt-trim and or if it is a short shaft.I have that motor and it is the same as the 1500.

Say 88 wasn't that just a cosmetic downgrade to keep from competeing with the new 150 V engines?

What I should have said is that you can't get parts at your local dealership and there are many parts that you can't get new.

oldmercs.com is a good site for info and an idea of parts availability.... I'm not saying that they aren't good engines but at @35 years old, they have long since crossed over to antiques and as such aren't for everyone.
