Sorry if this has been asked here a dozen times this is my first post trying to get some help id'ing the trim motor i need. Trim motor went out at the lake this weekend so i pulled it off and am trying to figure out which replaces mine. the engine is a 78 evinrude 140. the trim motor i took off was a 2 wire, 3 bolt motor and all the replacements i have found are 3 wire. i do not know any history prior to my ownership so i do not know if this is original to the boat or not? the wiring runs to a box where there are a couple of relays and a fuse. From what i gather the 3 wire operates off of a solenoid system? should i order the 3 wire and convert the wiring or is there a 2 wire motor out there i can replace the one i took off? Thanks for any help Jon

If you have a two wire motor that is what you have to replace it with. You can probably find one on e-bay or the last one I got was from *********; they are pricey about $180 but have no trouble with for 5+ years. Good luck

First..... establish if it is actually the trim motor. MANY times the relay box can go bad, switches go bad or you could even be low on fluid.

I have found the older trim motors on ebay but over the years I have only seen one really be bad. 99% it is actually something else in the trim system.

Try this first ;)

Disconnect the trim wires and with a 12V source....... touch one wire to the + and one to a - and this will activate the motor. If you reverse the wires it will too. The relay box switches the + and - so when the wires are activated the motor goes up and when they are swapped the motor goes down. If those tests work then your problem is NOT the motor.

When the wires are still disconnected use a multi meter on the other end coming from the relay and the power should be 12V when the switch is pushed and then the polarity will be reversed when the switch is pushed the other way.

Just trying to safe you some money and make sure you evaluate the whole system.

If the relays are bad (I have replaced many of those ;))they are available in the iboats store or maybe even at your local napa.

Agree with Bob but if you do find that it is the motor they are readily available right here at Iboats.

Re: 78 evinrude 140 trim motor replacement

thanks for the replies and i was actually hoping it was something other than the motor. it has been kind of weak lowering the engine lately but it was raising just fine. however at the lake this weekend it stopped completely. once i got home i tested the wiring and then took it apart. once i took apart the actual motor i realized what was wrong one of the magnets inside of the motor casing had broken apart and jambed it up. Will any 3 bolt 2 wire motor work or is there a specific one i should be looking for?
