78 150 Evinrude on 21ft Sea Arc boat. I have owned for 8 years and have been virtually only operator.
This last fall when attempting to put boat back on lift while shifting forward felt resistance continued to
push and heard and felt loud POP. Since the had been very difficult to shift and high idle lever does not
to stay all the way down when prop engaged. Used very little after this happend and trailered boat. Well
it is time to repair. Have read many threads on topic but non exact. Im sure I missed it and for that I
apologize for asking same question. Have read manual, hoping to get suggestions and ideas on where to
start so Im not chasing myself in circles. Thank you and look foward to your responses.

Your throttle and shift cables are probably bad, which caused the resistance. Somthing may have popped loose in the controls when you tried to open it up.

Anyway first disconnect the cables at the motor then try to shift it and go to full throttle. If cables move easily and freely when not attached to motor then your throttle arm needs taken apart and lubed. If they dont then id say cables are bad.

Thank you for a beginning place. Will check cables today. No salt water, located at Lake of the Ozarks.

Thanks again will get back with findings.

Another thing to check is to disconnect the shift cable from the mtr. Start it up and manually shift it back on the mtr to make sure it shifts easiley.

Will check that also. I gave you the wrong year on motor, it is an 1983. Will trouble shooting be the same?

Thanks Greg
