Hey guys great forum and thanks for the help I already got from reading these posts. I had a problem, no spark all 4 cylinders and after countless hours of troubleshooting and reading I have spark. My question is this, turns out the timer base sensors were out of adjustment, set them to the stop and I have spark and motor runs, what actually goes bad? Do they get weak, do they go out of adj, should I replace the timer base or will this be ok? I can give a detailed list of what was done but the timer base sensor adjustment is what fix it. Thanks

Were the sensor screws loose or damaged? Once the sensors are adjusted properly they really should not move. If the engine is running properly, there is nothing to do but enjoy it.

No they werent loose, so I'm not sure if out of adj is the right way to put it, reading a thread on this forum it said how to adjust them. So we did and we finally got spark, starts right up but haven't put in in the water yet to see how it runs. So I don't think they moved but they were way out from where they are now, I was just wondering if they go bad or get weak or exactly how they work or do I replace the timer base to be safe?

I don't think I would replace anything until I did a water test.

Yea I agree, especially for $300 bucks, should have it in the lake this weekend so hopefully it will be ok. I learned a lot from reading on this forum and found and fixed the problem, not sure if I should go through the trouble shooting we did but no spark seems to be a common topic.
Thanks for your reply daviet!

Weak ignition components tend to break down when the engine heats up to normal operating temps. Agree with Daviet-wait to till you run the engine. You will know if you have any further ignition problems once the engine reaches normal operating temps.

Re: 77 evinrude 85hp no spark. Update

Well, put the boat in the water Friday night and she runs like a champ:D we did adjust the timer base sensors to .0005 from the stop and it runs great, so thanks to this forum for all the info, very helpful, better than the service manual. Only wasted 100.00 bucks on a power pack that didn't need to be replaced, but saved a lot by not having to send it out and learned a lot from all the time spent on this now, simple motor:)
