77 200hp evinrude shift aligment

I put a new lower unit on my 77 200hp evinrude,how do i adjust shift shaft to get forward and reverse gears adjusted the correct way.

That shift shaft has to be set to a specified length before bolting the gearcase back on the motor. The length is given in the service manual, along with how to set it. Don't try to guess at this.
