Ok so im not mr outboard mechanic. But I have no spark on a boat that I just purchased.
and by following The trouble shooting manual. all four coils are bad and, trigger as well.
Trigger reads 2ohms between 1&3 and 9ohms between 2&4.
and all 4 coils are open on secondary side. (tested between the spark plug boot and ground)
I have to be missing something..help

i am using the CDI inc. guide lines... they seem to have the know how when it comes to outboard ignition.
Funny the boat sat under cover for 20 years . Its in beautiful shape . I got it for a steal so if I have to pay 1000.00 in parts to make it dependable then so be it. I mean 1600.00 for a nice ski boat is inexpensive in my book.the motor has 130 psi across the board for compression. iI get the ignition sorted and then its on to fuel system cleaning and carb rebuild. I just found it odd that this many things at once.

I don't know what's wrong with the motor, but I do agree with one thing. As you said, you are missing something. It is just so unlikely that so many things are bad at the same time. But I suppose it is possible. Stuff happens, as they say.

Not likely that you have 4 bad coils.-----Bad testing maybe.------Start with a load test of the battery.----Take starter apart for inspection and OHM test.-----No money spent on those steps !!

and all 4 coils are open on secondary side. (tested between the spark plug boot and ground)... hum ???

boot to frame ground open may simply tell you that

a- the pin pricks and spring coil in the boots are oxydized
b- the plug cable connexion to the coil is oxydized ( parts pictures seems to indicate the plug cables are removable??? are they on your coils if so remove them and retest boots to wire extremities
c- test your 4 the coils from the coil's pointy pin to the coil primary leads you should see continuity (ohms value I do not know on these but all coils should be similar in the results ...since all are presumed bad :-(
d- clean all primary connection points and clean the primary connections

e- retest with your meter on a proper scale to read the expected results

As Racerone indicated chances of 4 bad coils is really unlikely. If you find a cure don't assume the rest of your testing is bad... just fire it up

let us know the results of what you find ...fix the cheap stuff first :)

i think for me ohmic readings confusing i prefer voltage checks but i would check e- stop all plugs on stator power packs and so on sometimes the connectors get corided all ground connections if all fail disconect the stator/power pack kill wire not sure the color but be careful if it starts you cant shut it off

thanks for the reply but that was all done yesterday before the post ....I do know my way around . yes tore starter down trued commutator on my lathe ..new brushes . spins motor real nice .. may have tested secondary on coils incorrectly will double back on those tomorrow.

with black / yellow wire disconnected what was output stator voltage ?

I doubt stator voltages would influence a basic continuity test on the coils
I tried looking up coil values but did not find the info

anybody ???

I may be wrong but it looks like those coils would have something in the 250-350 ohms range from coil HV output to ground wire
