i just got an old 1976 Johnson 6hp for my small sailboat. it starts fine and idles normally but when i put it in forward it seems to dog out. trying to get in an inlet recently the motor seemed to be not getting enough gas and was struggling. i put it back in neutral and it revved like a champ, even seems to when in reverse too. when nearly open all the way it dogs out and every once in a while it kicks in and wants to go like it should and then quickly dogs out again. any suggestions?

Sounds like a dirty carb. Clean and readjust.

Could be ignition OR fuel.
First move should be to check the spark with a spark tester.
If spark is OK, troubleshoot fuel system.

Get an insulated pliers and pull one plug at a time when running and see if you have a cyl going dead on it when it acts up.
