Hey guys,

Im having issue with the flywheel moving the stator plate while im trying to start it. I removed the flywheel to do an ignition tune up and now that I put it back on it moves the plate. Any ideas on what could be causing this?? Any help would be great!!

Thanks!!

If you remove the stator plate, there is a bearing that it rides on. A plastic ring sorta thing that fits in a race on the bottom side of the stator. I have had the same issue before and I greased it up! But experts here will say that's not the answer. It has to have friction. So clean it up and try again.

Yes that makes perfect sense, but he could have installed the flywheel on top of the derlin ring instead of it fitting up in the underside channel of the ignition plate...

And not sure about the OP's torque setting but my '76 40 HP Johnson is 105ft/lbs. And that is a lot...

How do I know if it was installed wrong? Everything went back together just fine. I just don't know what the issue is!!

Did you dis-assemble and clean since your first post? Kinda hard to describe in words but the ring is like a piston ring with a gap. It can fall crooked or misaligned. You'll see how it fits once you're in there. You carefully lower the stator plate over the crank trying to be centered. Once it makes contact with the ring, slightly move the plate North South East or West and it will drop over the edge of the ring fitting snug. You also may have linkage from the twist grip to the stator plate binding or malfunctioning. Inspect the linkage while you have it apart. Fly wheel torque is 40-45 ft lbs.
