ive got this motor 76 70hp all ready to go except for the shifter. i dont have the oringinal control box just an omc control box. when hooking up the cables i noticed that when i shift into forward the prop spins backwards. is it possible that the forward and reverse gears are backwards or is it that this control box is not compatible with this engine? its a mechanical shift. the control box cannot be made to go any other way. basically forward is reverse and vice versa. is there a way to reverse the shift lever on the motor? currently when the shift lever on the motor is moved forward it goes into reverse and when pushed back it goes into forward. my manual says for the removal press shift rod down to engage reverse to get pinion gear out. but on this foot(which is a different color than the motor, so i would def say its not the original)shift rod down is forward. is there a way to tell if this is a counter rotating foot without taking the foot off? i've pulled the prop and see no idenifiable markings. can i simply swap the forward and reverse gears?

You should post some pictures if possible. You say the bottom is different which makes me wonder about the mechanism too, if it was switched with say an early eighties motor then the shift mechanism,(arm on side of engine), may have been switched too and would give that result.

IMAG0381 (478x800).jpg heres a pic of the foot. IMAG0382 (800x478).jpgthis pic shows it in reverseIMAG0383 (800x478).jpgthis one in forward. my control box will only pull the cableforward, when put into forward which in turn on this motor puts it in reverse.

What's the exact model # of the mtr ?? On the '75 70 hp they used two different g/c's and different shift linkage on the mtr. For the early g/c you pushed down for forward and up for reverse. Later ones were the opposite.

There are no counter-rotating 70 hp mtrs. Only V-6's are.

Your motor has the wrong gearcase for it. There are two possible fixes - either get the upper shift linkage (in particular, the shift arm that runs under the carb) off a 1978 or later 70/75hp, or get a lower unit that matches the year of your motor.

As Boobie said, there is no counter-rotation available on the 70s...
