The pump is the same for short and long shafts. The length of the water tube should be the only difference.

They used the same pump impeller from about 1954 to 1978.-----For the 79 models they used a different pump.-----Smaller impeller.-----So at a dealer you would get the correct parts for your 76 model.-----Or you can fit the 79 model pump on your motor if you get the complete upgrade kit.

Ok soo when I opened her up there was a roll pin in the drive shaft that looked too small like it may have broken. I ordered a replacement and had to wait for it . I'm going to post some pictures for reference material for any that may need them . Including old style vs new style
During re assembly I must have missed seating the intake tube correctly. There was no water so I took it apart again tested the pump in water with a drill ,worked well. Then I blew air through the water intake tube it make sure all the pathways were clear. The old impeller would have probably still functioned, I found a blockage of seaweed in the inlet tube under the wear plate .

The roll pin at the top is important.----It drives / spins the mechanical seal under the power head.----Keeps water out of engine.------Copper tube MUST be installed in the exhaust housing before installing the lower unit.

The copper tube must be installed in the exhaust housing first.----Then you can see and guide the tube into the pump outlet !!
