finally tried to start the 1150. it fired on the first try, but revved up very quickly. i shut it off quickly to avoid overrevving, noticed some smoke/steam? coming out of carb throats. thought it might be lean mixture, so backed idle screws out to 2 turns, still did same thing. only thing I haven't touched on this engine are the carbs, they don't leak at all so i assumed they were ok. timing is set at 5BTDC pickup, carbs are completely closed at idle. any suggestions??

forgot to add that the primer bulb felt weird when priming. like I couldn't squeeze it anymore, but it didn't feel full. I don't really know where to start though?

Re: 76 1150 rev issue

Let me try to pick apart your post and be of some help.

it fired on the first try, but revved up very quickly. i shut it off quickly to avoid overrevving,

So, find out why by looking over the throttle mechanisms and figure it out.

noticed some smoke/steam? coming out of carb throats.

It's possible but I might suspect gas vapor. Had it backfired or something some smoke might come out carbs but might clear as it runs, and not be something paid a lot of attention too should it be operating.

thought it might be lean mixture, so backed idle screws out to 2 turns, still did same thing.

A lean mixture might let it sneeze sending some smoke out the intake ( I suppose), yet until you get the idle where it is supposed to be that idle mixture adjustment is probably a bit pre mature.

only thing I haven't touched on this engine are the carbs, they don't leak at all so i assumed they were ok.

That's good that they aren't leaking, but they could still have stuff clogging the jets. Perhaps still a little early to condemn those yet.

I believe when it starts at dead idle the timing might be something more like tdc or atdc and the 5* sounds more like a pickup point

forgot to add that the primer bulb felt weird when priming.

So if it don't feel right get a new one and install it.

like I couldn't squeeze it anymore, but it didn't feel full. I don't really know where to start though?

Go back and drop the idle mechanism to get and idle.

These motors are real thirsty to start and on some almost require a fine line between flooding it out or not enough choke to get them up and going. Once warmed up they might fire right off, or might again need the fast idle position and some choke all over again.

Thanks Yep!
Your right 5 is pickup; I had thought that the pickup meant at idle, but now i realize the difference lol im stupid.
I will try adjusting the timing to TDC or ATDC.
When I looked over the throttle linkages, they were set right but I will check again to verify carbs fully closed. The carbs are weird "backdrag" design that automatically leans out the mixture at midrange. I was going to tear them down anyway to disable backdrag feature, so I might as well clean them now. The motor starts up very quick, maybe 2nd revolution when cold, so I'm thinking thats a good sign, she just needs some more pampering to run right.

Ok I figured out my problem. I just read Clams' LInkSync for inlines and now I understand what I did wrong. I'm really beginning to dislike the Clymer manual...

Get a factory manual.

There are bootleg (copied to cd) cd versions available pretty cheap at that online auction site that is so popular.
