Hi , i have a merc 75 outboard 4 cyl not sure what year because i don't think it's the original motor for this 87 boat but probably close ser # A193757. This motor hasn't been ran in 3 1/2 years. I drained all the gas and cleaned tank, put in fresh mix. Motor started right up, ok problem is motor will idle but has a miss all the way up to about 4500 then clears up, does good at 5500. Shut it off for about 15 min , Won't start unless you re- prime it with the bulb and choke it alot. I'm leaning towards a fuel problem on this but not sure.Maybe gummy carbs. timing is right , spark to all cyl. any help would be appreciated, Thanks

Re: 75 Merc

I'd guess a fuel problem also. You may have gummy carbs like you said. Fuel left in carbs for 3 1/2 years could cause all kinds of problems. It wouldn't hurt to run some cleaner through the carbs, but I wouldn't be suprised if you need to pull the carbs off and give the a thorought cleaning and possibly a rebuild.

Also if you have a fuelline filter installed after the bulb, (between the bulb and the engine) and its dirty, you could also get similar symtoms. Replace the filter. If you dont have a fuel line filter, I would recoment installing one before the bulb. (between the tank and the bulb)
