75 MC-1 Rebuild

Now that I have the engine completely rebuilt and the boat completely rewired, It is time to tackle the outdrive!

I have the 165 with 24 teeth on both gears, the book says that there is supposed to be timing marks on these gears and that it is critical to time them properly. My gears have no marks on them, so is there a different way to align them?

Also I am using parts from 3 different drive housings so I will definately need to check the gear clearances and torques. Is it cheaper to buy the tools or take it to a shop and have them set when I get to that point?

The newer 24-24 gear sets don't have timing marks...

Depends on how much the shop will charge you and your confidence in doing the job yourself...

I have been an aircraft mechanic for the past 21 years so I am sure that I can do it no problem, just hate buying tools that I will most likely never use again

I was an aircraft mechanic too, and you know what? That means nothing as far as how to rebuild a drive.
Anyone that can use tools can rebuild a drive if they understand how to read a manual and follow directions.
You need the proper special tools to set gear heights and bearing preloads and there is just no way around it.
Those tools cost money, and shops charge money to do the job.

Have you looked into a new SEI upper for your drive? $645 with 3 year warranty.

Following the manuel is pretty straightforward and easy. No problem with my ability to do it properly IF I have the correct tools. I have all of the parts in like new shape and can rebuild what I have for less than $50 in seals. So I am really not interested in buying a new drive when there is nothing wrong with the one that I have. Just wondering what the price of those special tools are compared to the price of having a shop set the gears and preloads.

I guess it all depends on how much the shops in your area charge to do the job, and how much you can buy the special tools for. Might want to get the part numbers for the special tools you need from the manual and check ebay for some used ones.

Ebay was a great idea and I can buy the tools for about $150 except for the company that sells them wont ship to Alaska. I am going to go over to the local shop and see if I could rent some for a day

There is also a way around the "won't ship to Alaska".. Just go to Boyer (if they are still named that) and set up an account. Then have the tools shipped directly to their Seattle base. Have done that many times.

I thought about that, we have an account with AML and can go that route. I am going to try to borrow or rent the tools for a day first though.
The joys of getting a boat that hasn't seen water in 20 + years. There are alot more parts that need help instead of spending $150 on tools that I will hopefully only use once. While I am waiting for the new seals to get here I guess it is time to tackle the trim pump & Lower Unit.
