I have a 75 hp E-Tech I purchased as part of a boat package in the spring of 2007. It ran great until the summer of last year while fishing Lake Michigan. It began to miss while motoring through the no wake zones and finally while out on the lake, it quit and we had trouble starting it.

Took it in and had the spark plugs changed and made it through the summer but it continued to miss a beat around the 2800-3000rpm marks.

I took it in last fall for it's early 3 year checkup. They changed the spark plugs again and now after a few trolling trips up to Lake Superior and a couple walleye trips, it's started missing badly on the last trip over to Lake Michigan.

I can't believe it's the spark plugs again already after only a handful of trips. Do I need to look at a different type of plug or ? I spoke with another guy who had the 75horse on his pontoon and he said his misfires also around the 2800 rpm mark.

Not exactly what I have in it for plugs but they cost around $10 each.

Anyone else having these types of problems or any suggestions?

Re: 75 E-Tech

Is the MAP the latest image for your motor? Was this a BRP dealer changing plugs? You should get 300 hours from a set of plugs. Has anyone checked the motor for stored codes with diagnostic sw? While it was still in warranty, the plugs should be free! Were the plugs properly indexed? Early plug demise and poor running is often due to not indexing them.

Not sure what you mean by MAP. Also not sure what you refer to as indexing. The last plugs were changed by the dealer. I was informed when I purchased the motor I would run it for the 3 years, bring it in for the 3 year checkup at which time they would change the plugs, install any motor updates, cahnge the gear lube and that would be it. That's why it so surprised me that I had to change the plugs beforehand. When I purchased the boat package, the motor came with a 7 year warranty so that's still good. Funny but on a recent trip another angler asked how I liked the E-Tech 75. I said I loved the fuel economy and he asked if I had any trouble with it missing around the 2800-3000rpm mark and I said yes. He said he experienced the same problem with the 75hp he had on his pontoon. Thanks for the reply. It can be a little hair raising 7-8 miles out on Lake Michigan with a motor that's running a little rough.

Re: 75 E-Tech

MAP is the firmware loaded in the ECU (computer). Most E-Tecs have gone through a number of upgrades.

Indexing:

read this ...

This video shows 'how to':

E-Tec spark plugs MUST BE INDEXED, period, or you will get early failure and crappy running as I pointed out above. Was the dealer's tech E-Tec qualified and trained???

You should have requested a printed report from your 300 hour service, since it would show any logged errors, the version MAP installed, etc, etc.
