Got a used 15hp and did the normal used motor stuff. Changed the impeller, thorough carb cleaning, checked and timed the ignition components.

All looked good so I put it back together and it wont start. It will try here and there, but wont start and run. There are no air leaks.

Plugs are getting spark, all seems to be working, but it seems as though gas isnt being distributed to the plugs. I am not positive on that, but that seems like thats whats happening.

any other ideas, or anything to check?

thanks

Re: 74 15hp

Go to the Engine FAQs Forum, Joho. Do "Outboard won't start".

Let us know what you find. My money is on unsuccessful carb cleaning.

Oh, by the way. It would be nice to know what make 15 it is.

1974 Chrysler 15hp
Model Number: 152 HA

Well, the first problem I had was my starter string was too small. I wasnt getting enough on it to start it because when I made a emergency one that is alot longer and wrapped it around the flywheel, it starts. More torque.

Now I have a few other potential problems I ran into.

I cleaned the carb again by soaking, spraying, cleaning orfices with wire, and then blowing. The thing is clean. I first started by backing the screw out 1 full turn. It started and ran, but I had to monitor the throttle because if it went down to slow on the handle, it would die. It was also sneezing a bit, so I opened the carb up a little more and it somewhat stopped, but then still would die when the throttle handle was twisted all the way down to slow.

I want for this motor to idle when twisted down all the way. Are there any other settings or adjustments I can make to the idle. It will idle somewhat down and stay that way, but when I turn the handle all the way backed off, it just dies.

I would appreciate any recommendations.

thanks

I'm pretty sure the Chrysler is setup so if the carb is closed all the way it will stop.Probably a throttle stop screw for idle speed.Difficult to tell but appears to be on the port side. Some carbs have an air pilot screw turning clockwise richens mix, other carbs clockwise leans the mix.Idle should be set at 700.

Re: 74 15hp

Some models had a stop switch built right in under the flywheel. Turning the tiller handle down to this point stopped the engine. Some had a rubber covered stop switch in the front lower cowl next to where the pull cord enters. These engines are stopped by pushing in on the switch and holding until the engine stops.

If you have a kill switch in front of the engine, idle speed is controlled by a long screw and locknut on the linkage mounted on the exhaust cover. Screw this screw in clockwise to increase the idle speed until the engine will idle reliably with the tiller twisted all the way down.

Exhaust cover is the plate on the side of the engine where the spark plug wires run and the direction the spark plugs point. It is roughly triangular shaped.
