thats right 20 feet. It has a merc 233, which is a ford 351w. Its heavy for a 20 foot boat as I'm sure your srv 220 is.

I'm jealous....I only have a 188....I would love to put a 351 in it.....It does O.K., but I would love to see what it would do with the extra hp.....& yes, it is heavy.....Very stable in rough water..... What is your top speed & what type/pitch prop do you run?.....JK

I run either a 21 or 23 inch stainless 3 blade. Its no longer 233hp, I'm not sure how much its pumping out now. I changed the carb to a 4 barrel and switched the intake to a aftermarket one. I will say this though,it has a ton of low end torque and have not taken it past 3900rpm. I've had it up to 50mph according to the speedo, still had a lot of throttle left. I have a feeling the speedo is not reading right. I finished the project late in the season and didn't have time to really enjoy it. Can't wait tell spring.

Now, I'm really jealous......I have a buddy that is moving.....He is going to give me his van CHEAP! The rebuilt 351 only has 10,000 miles on it....I now have a winter project... :) ...JK

sounds like the van might get a 302 and the boat a 351. Good thing about that is 90% of the acc are a direct bolt on if not more.

love1u0, it looks like a lot of boat for the money....Two concerns I would have are: 1. I can't really get a good look at the drive.....It looks very much like an O.M.C.......If it is an O.M.C. I would think twice......They have been out of business for ten years & parts (though still available) will become harder & harder to find....More importantly, finding a qualified mech. to work on it will be hard as well......If it is a Volvo, that would be good thing, they are solid drives.....<br /><br />2.That's alot of boat for a small block Chevy....But if you are happy with the speed # 's, then not a problem.....<br /><br />3. How many hours are on it & is it raw water cooled or a closed system?....<br /><br />4. How does the drive package/engine look as far as corrosion is concerned?<br />Just a few things to think about before you jump in.......JK

It looks clean for a 1979. My main concern for a boat that size and weight is the engine. As Haut Medoc said, that's a lot of boat for a small block. The GM 5.7 is a great motor but not enough power for that boat. Get some people on there along with your gear and that boat is going to struggle to maintain a plane. That is if you can get it on a plane. My father has a Bayliner that's about the same size as this boat and he has the King Cobra Ford 460, which is rated at 340HP. He needs all of that motor to push that tub. I could not even imagine a 350 in there.<br /><br />I too would be leery of the OMC drive. I agree that's an OMC 800 stringer on that boat. I have one too and I have heard from an equal amount of people that it's a great workhorse and from the other half it's a piece of you know what. I haven't really had any major problems with mine. I agree that parts can be hard to find but there are still a lot of Stringers out there. Some companies have bought the machines and do make aftermarket parts. You can buy rebuilt OMC 800 units. I am planning on driving mine to the drive craps out and then going with a Merc conversion or rebuilt OMC unit. Who knows, maybe by then the boat won't be worth converting and I will just buy another boat.

Thanks for the advise guys. I guess the captains wife says I have to wait, but it is good to know that size engine would be to small for that length of boat. Im very happy with my small Sea Ray, it has been nothing but good to me...shes just a little to small for what I want though.<br /><br />Maybe next year :( <br /><br />Thanks,<br />Chris

love1uo, the boat you are or were looking at is a great boat. If it had a big block I would have said go for it. I have friends that found similar boats only to be disappointed with the performance and we don’t want that to happen to you. That boat with a newer 5.7 that is rated at 325HP probably would be fine. With that nice Sea Ray you have now you probably go all weekend on a tank of gas. This is something you have probably grown accustomed to. Also, that boat has many options from air to a full head. Honestly, I feel the head is only good for number 1. Get a buddy who decides to do a power dump and you can count on a bad situation. In my opinion a port-ta potti is the way to go. Leave the power dumps for the marina. Another thing is the air conditioning. When is craps out its going to cost big bucks to repair. My motto is to just keep it simple. Then again that’s just me and I am frugal. Sorry but I agree with the Captains wife. <br /><br />Have you thought about a cuddy cruiser? My SRV225 is a great boat and does fairly good on gas. A great all around family boat. It has plenty of room and has plenty of punch if you want to get up and go and has no problem pulling skiers or tubes. The cuddy has plenty of room for two adults or an adult and two kids. Justa thort!

I was looking for a good over-nighter for four or five people.<br /><br />Maybe 22 to 26 feet...<br /><br />My uncle tried to give me a 73 25' Bayliner Saratoga, that thing was a mess...I had to pass on it.

The ad for that 26' sundancer says that it will do 27mph @ 3000 rpms.. that's pretty good for a boat that side.

They is no way it will hold plane at 3000RPM with a 5.7L.

When I worked for a sea ray dealership,I had the opportunity to sea trial a number of new 260DA's<br />although they were newer than what you're referring to, I can tell you this,the 5.7 litre was a real slug out of the hole compared to the 7.4 litre and used almost as much fuel, even without passengers...I ran the big block model at a "demo days", and even with ten people on board it would still make 42-43 mph (on gps) with the rpm's at the limiter and trimmed right in Long Beach outer harbor...with a Bravo three...the small block was pretty disappointing overall
