Re: 73 merc 1150 help

There is a locking washer that jams that nut. You need to bend the tabs down to allow it to come off. You need a spanner to remove it, although you may be able to crack it into pieces and it will fall out. Why do you want to remove the propshaft? You will need to shim it, if you need to work on the gears. Installing hte bearing carrier nut also requires the specka spanner. Also the threads that hold the nut are likely long gone as welll.

Re: 73 merc 1150 help

ok it looks like the water pump looking thing attatched 2 the drive shaft is toast as in melted the drive shaft turns the prop shaft freely and with little effort .but for lack of a better term the 'water pump' inner housing is metal could the metal and rubber impeller be the cause of the metal shavings or should i worry about the gears

check the spline on the driveshaft and the place at the power head where they meet for damage

Re: 73 merc 1150 help

i,m still confused the lower unit is the outdrive why do you want to remove the shaft? you said it turns freely and the prop spins if i,m not mistaken correct. should be able to rebuild the water pump unbolt it the (Melted thing) check the oil in the outdrive for metal in the oil and water which would give it a milky look if none replace oil in the outdrive from the bottom crew with the top screw out until it flows out the top an put the top screw back in remove the oil container then replace the bottm screw make sure you drive is in neutral Prop spins freely make shure your shifter is in neutral and reinstal the unit. My bad thought this was another post this unit is shot right? ok i havn,t benn into tearing an outdrive apart and hopefuly won,t have to for some time to come my bad sorry

This is the tool that removes the bearing carrier nut
bearing-carrier-tool.jpg
a Mercury tool that you can buy, or you can carefully drill holes into the nut in 4 places 90* apart and remove them by prying apart. Done it.
Here's the component picture from the manual
Lower-Units0061.jpg
You'll have to let a lot of penetrating oil sit at the bottom of the bearing carrier (maybe for a few days) and heat the housing when pulling it out.

Re: 73 merc 1150 help

the water pump shavings will not affect the lower gears theryare sealed below the waterpump. There are 2 screw on the side and bottom of the unit to let the gear oil out and must be refilled from the bottom up with 90 weight gear oil

You may be jumping the gun here. Tearing into the lower unit is no small undertaking, especially if you do not have a manual.

Describe the metal shavings as best you can (size and appearance) and quantity. It is normal to find fine metal "dust" collected on the magnetic drain plug. Water in the oil is much more common than you may think and can quite possibly be corrected without tearing it apart.

Any metal in the gearcase would originate in the gearcase. It is not from the waterpump. Depending on how bad the impeller has melted, you may need to replace the entire waterpump assy (upper housing, lower housing, impeller) because it will have become distorted from the heat.

oh thank you . well i pulled the drain plug and found water in the oil to the point that the oil came out milky along with really fine metal shavings. after removeing the water pump there was about 2-3 visible drops of water in the oil but the oil was not milky at all but the really fine metal shavings are still in the oil the metal. the shavings look like glitter blown into tiny pieces. the shavings are in the oil i drained into a clean plastic bowl

Re: 73 merc 1150 help

you removed the plugs from the lower unit and there was water milky and metal "or" just where the (WATER PUMP ) is it pumps Water that would be normal thesre should be NO (water) in the lower part of the outdrive ( Milky) or Metal. some metal will be present in the screw that is normal they are magnetic and draw the chips to them

This is somewhat confusing. There should not be any oil in the vicinity of the waterpump.

If you rub the metal shavings between your finger and thumb can you feel them? Soft and powdery? Gritty like pepper? Course like sand?

Re: 73 merc 1150 help

the shavings are soft oh i did a bad job describing the location of the water pump it is mounted on the drive shaft in the outdrive aparently what ever seal that seals the pump failed i found rubber chunks of the impeller in the last lil bit of oil im assuming they just sank to the bottom of the oil
