73 70 HP Chrysler Starter Spin time

Should the starter stay engaged with the flywheel for only a couple seconds? if not why would it not keep spinning the flywheel?

When you turn the key to the start position, the starter spool should engage with the flywheel. As soon as the engine fires up, the starter spool should disengage.

If it engages for a bit then kicks out before it starts it's getting weak and should be rebuilt.
Do a compression/spark test.J
