Seriously need help and advise. I purchase this boat a few years back and have been neglecting to fix it. Now its a new year and finally made time to get to it. Well, first of all the outboard cranks have sparks but would not turn over. Would this issue be the coil pack or the amplifier assembly? Please advise.

Welcome to iboats!

That said....I'm confused.
You say "first of all the outboard cranks have sparks"
I take this to mean, motor flywheel rotates and the plugs have spark.

Then you say, "but would not turn over"
To me this means motor does not rotate when key is turned.

"Cranking the motor" is the same as "turning it over"

Which is it?

Do you mean to say the motors' flywheel rotates when you turn the key and has spark to the cylinders BUT won't start?

Just trying to clarify what you're describing......

An OEM manual is highly recommended(not Seloc/Cylmers) an OMC manual.

It will tell exactly what to do to figure out what is or isn't working and pay for themselves the first time you use it, I really think it sis as necessary as any other tool in your tool box.

You can get one here at iboats or look on Ebay if $ is tight.

As to your problem, an engine needs fuel, air and fire to run, if ti turns over and you have spark the fuel would be a good place to start.

I would get a manual, tear down the carbs and see where you are then.

And also needs enough compression, and a strong enough battery and starter to crank it fast enough to start.

Howdy.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Go to the Engine FAQs Forum. Do "Outboard won't start".

Let us know what you find.

72 Johnson Evinrude 65hp won't start

need help folks. This is my first boat.....I have a 72 Evinrude 65hp that would not start. The motor gets power, no sparks and has gas. My next guess is buying a brand new amplifier assembly along with a coil kit....what do you guys think??? The previous owner told me that I need to replace the voltage regulator...is there such a thing on this motor. please advise...

its got a rectifer regulator but i dont believe that will cuse it not to spark
make sure that it is turnning full rpm it could be a possible coil problem

In the duplicate thread that you have on this issue, you mention that you believe that you are getting fuel delivery. but no spark. You also mention "replacing the amplifier," and getting a "coil kit."

If your motor is a 1972 65hp, it doesn't have an amplifier. The first thing that you should do is to post the exact model number of your motor, so that we can be sure of what components you have and better advise you. The data plate with the information should be on the port side transom bracket.

If the motor is, indeed, a 1972 65hp, my first suggestion is to check the key switch in the control unit. Once you have confirmedwhat motor you have, we can advise you on how to do this.
