I know this question has been asked waaayy back in the archives but I have a different twist to it and want to put it before fresh eyes.
I have a '72 Johnson 100 hp 50th anniversary edition motor that I bought WITHOUT the control box (didn't come with one). This was to replace my '68 Johnson 85 hp that burned up on me. Both motors LOOK identical BUT....they upgraded the ignition system in the '72 from points to trigger fire. As a result, the wiring harnesses (both engine side and boat side) are different from my '68. I was hoping to plug the shift control box from my '68 (still mounted in the boat) right into the '72 engine. Sure, it plugged right in, no problem, but the engine wouldn't even turn over! Upon further study, I found that the wires were totally different and did different things.
I haven't found a control box ANYWHERE! Found the control box wiring harness (used) but no box and the box has the electric shift switch, a hot horn and some blocking diodes that are needed to make this engine run. First off, anybody have a complete control box? Part #385251? If not...wondering if I can use one of those push button control boxes I see around (from the same era) and if so...how do I wire it? Also, heard of using a 3 way toggle switch to do the shifting but I would need someone to supply me with a wiring schematic to install that. Any help would be appreciated....
