Model 85ESL-72R. Shifting switch in the control unit literally fell to pieces in my hand. Can anyone direct me to find this switch at a REASONABLE price. MFG P/N 0385253, switch & cable assy. Every thing I've seen so far is at least $250.00 plus. Or an equivalent.

By shifting switch do you mean the control box shift lever that you physically move forward and backward for your desired gears? Or the switch you depress before you are able to move it into gear?

Since those parts are getting rarer the laws of supply and demand apply. They have the supply, They make the DEMANDS!

If you are handy electrically, you could fabricate a switch to be mounted outside of the control box and just operate the throttle from the box, be careful to only shift at idle and start in neutral. Forward-no current to either wire, Neutral-current to green wire, Reverse-current to both green and blue wires

Being as how that switch is no longer being made and is in short supply, and being as how the list price on that switch is $310, if you found a new one for $250 I'd say that is reasonable. Even at those prices, no aftermarket mfr has stepped forward to make replacements. Better grab it or resign yourself to a Mickey Mouse solution or a used switch that may or may not be any good.

Just bought a shifter controll from a local repair at home shop. Would you believe 40 Bucks. And he knpws what they sell for on the internet. A great guy that will always get my business. It was a push button Evinrude but is interchangable with the POLAK switch in the Johnson Polak will not even acknowledge that they even sold a bunch to Johnson in the early 70s. now I have a good controll and one with a broken shift switch.
