72' johnson 65hp electric shift switch

I just got a new (used) switch for the electric shift. Problem is the old one has five wires and new one has three. Same color for the three wires but old one has two more white wires. I am pretty sure it will still work but does anyone know how to wire it up, minus the two white wires. By the way, the replacement switch that should go back in was rediculously priced and very hard to find. Any info would be great. Thanks in advance.

Same problem I had ,my switch had 6 wires,new has 4. The white wires are for starter cutout circuitry. Yes it will work. Green wire is neutral, blue and green is for reverse when power is supplied to them. just make sure your starter is moving freely and drops down when it starts the motor. Also check to see black wire with green strip is connected to the ign. it is your electronic choke. look you more information by doing a search.

The white wires are for the start-in-neutral-only safety feature. You can use the 3-wire switch by connecting the white wire from the engine cable directly to the "S" terminal on the key switch. But WARNING, if you do that, it is possible to start the motor in gear--even in gear with a wide-open throttle!!! Please don't do that while I'm standing or swimming nearby. I can't afford to sue you, but run over someone with a lawyer friend and it will cost you way more than the correct switch would.

The other thing to watch out for is make sure you got a Hydro-Electric shift switch. The Electramatic switch looks exactly like it, but won't work.
