I have a 1972 johnson 125 horse. i just recently purchaced this on a 78 yarcraft 16.5 trihull. the pulse pack was fried when i bought it. i relpaced the pulse pack and solonoid (and impeller). the boat worked fine last summer but i noticed the positive terminal of the battery smokes when i turn the key. while operating the boat the terminals get very hot. the battery is a 700 ca marine and is brand new. what do i do? nothing else is hooked up ( radio / fishfinder). i dont know where to start. i have a manual for this particular engine but it only gives me wiring diagrams. after its one month of use i took the battery to the store to be tested and it was already bad. somethings not right! pls help were do i start... thank you craig from lower michigan.

The battery cables are almost certainly corroded inside the sheathing and need to be replaced. You may be able to cut them back, but there is a good possibility that the damage will be widespread.​

dirty, loose connections or a bad battery cable. take the cable loose on each end, battery and engine, clean them and tighted them. the terminal on the battey has to be tight. check the cable for nick, cut, swelling. the tend to go bad from the inside out, only takes a small amount of water to get in them. the loose or dirty connection cause the electricity to arc the connection, creating heat, the same for a deteriorated cable. it will ruin a battery quickly and the pulse pack.

You must locate the source of resistance unless you like buying those pulse packs. That can fry the pulse pack in an instant. Take the terminals off the battery and clean them and the battery posts shiny bright. Put them back on tight. Do it! Don't just look and assume it's OK. If that's not the problem, look for corroded cables as mentined. Don't attempt to start the motor till you are sure you've found the trouble.
