well this motor just seems to want to go to the bottom of the lake. first overheating so i replaced the impeller , then no spark so replaced the preamp in the distributor then overheating again turns out a chunk of crap stuck in bypass valve now it won't shift out of drive and only will run at slightly above idle speed@full throttle.this boat was stored for 12yrs, IS IT AN ANCHOR?

Check the shifter adjustment nut in the motor leg while someone else is shifting for you. That nut may be cracked and you arent shifting. If pivot screw in lower unit was removed by accident while doing an oil change on lower unit that is your problem. Take lower unit off and while turning the drive shift by hand shift it by pulling up or pushing down the shifter shaft.

On youf fuel issue rebuild the fuel pump if you have not already done so. Chech all your fuel lines for an air leak. A common spot is at the fuel disconnect to the gas can. The Oring gets deteriated .

sounds like you can fight 12 years of storage piece by piece for the next 12 years or give it a thorough cleaning and check-up before starting.
Your sequence of problems sounds to me like you are working your way down through 12 years of storage decay. The question is whether or not you will reach bottom before causing permanent damage.

Where is the bypass valve? I'm having an overheat problem myself on my '84 75HP. New impeller, head gasket good, good compression etc. The motor starts and runs like a clock. After reading this I want to check out the bypass.

red_neck_cpa ;the by-pass is located port side of the motor about the same level of the bottom spark plug. right in front of the electrical conections(power conections for tach /gauges ignition /etc)it is about 1-1/4" by 1" plate with 1/4' bolt top and bottom.take it out and start motor, anything in there comes out. thats what i did but i aint no mechanic, Marine Doctor told me about it(
