I have a Merc 800 80 hp, that needs the rotor shaft replaced. My question is can this be done by someone with above average mechanical skills.? I have found the part($200)and also a Mercury service manual.
This boat and engine have sat for ten years, the fuel system was run dry after it's last time out and the lower end was drained and refilled with lube.
My hope is that this could be back on the water with $400 in work. My guess is that the pump and the carbs should have some attention.
If anyone has any information that could provide some insite it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I think you'll spend a lot more than $400 before you get up on plane. The rotor shaft itself will eat up a lot of labor (look at that distributor and see how you would remove it). Then take it apart.
Then rebuild the carbs and replace the water pump. And hope it needs nothing else.
Not impossible, certainly.Just be sure the motor is worth this much to you.

DHP

Thanks for your response, I have a lot of experience in automotive and construction equipment repair. My thoughts are to attempt the work myself along with a good manual and some insite from members here.
I have found carb kits and a pump, prices are reasonable. (except for the rotor shaft) It ran great years ago, but I do understand that time can have its way with things.

What is wrong with the shaft? What OTHER parts are going to have to be replaced in conjunction? You might consider finding a used distributor. Better yet, find a whole parts motor or two.

To answer the question - yes it can be done. Just get the manual.

Also I think that shaft is way too high, yes I know it retails for $400, but in the used parts market $200 will get you a whole distributor, trust me on this, it's what I do.

-W

Clams,
Thanks, this is the kind of info I am searching for. Any suggestions where to look for used parts.?
