I bought a 71 7.5 at a yard sale for $100. The man told me the stator was bad. When I took it apart the only wires that are not corroded and broken are the 2 wires coming off of the stator and the plug wires. The points do not look bad, and the insulators are cracked but I see no signs of arcing. I am replacing all the bad wires but need to know if there is a way to test the stator without reasembling the engine, as a new one is $200-$300. I don't believe this engine has a lot of hours on it, its clean as a pin, few scratches. I will clean carb. and fuel pump, new lines, check impeller. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Because of the age,I will part it out before I sink $400-$500 on parts to get it going, but I hate to it's in too good of shape. Can a later model Electrical system with charging be put on this Engine?
Thanks
