Re: 71 Merc 400 water pump
Kid,
If you blew air through the hose on the tell tale and got no air out the water pump, sounds like your copper water tube isn't seated in it's grommets. Do you hear air like under the motor? If so pull
the l/u back off and insert water tube up into the drive housing until you feel it seat with grommet on the bottom of the motor.
Now push the l/u back up to the drive housing and just before it meets shine a small flashlight to insure the water tube goes into the grommet on the water pump. Also while bolting up the l/u don't let it slide back down and allow the water tube to come out of it's grommets. Now you should have two
slotted screws on the side of the l/u.
Upper screw is the vent and lower is the fill. Open both and fill through the bottom hole allowing any air to escape. When oil comes out of the top hole you're full. Replace the top screw first then QUICKLY replace the bottom screw losing as little oil as possible. A l/u oil pump makes it much easier.
($12 at Walmart) Don't forget the gaskets on top and bottom screws.
