Hi All,

I need some advice on what to do with a crook Amplifier box for my 71 60HP Johnson.
A new one is really expensive (around $300 Australian) and mine is broken (no output). Does anyone have a circuit diagram so that I may fix it or is it possible to replace it with an aftermarked CDI unit designed for a car?

Any help most appreciated.

Gordon.

Nope..But you can get aftermarket by CDI Electronics. $199.00 US.

Gordon:
Where there's a will, there's always a way...

>can't find a used one?
>do you have a schematic of the engine?
>do you have a manual?
>have you done the troubleshooting?

*fixing the 'pack' is not hard, its getting into it through the sealant that's the challenge, and sometimes not possible.

I don't have a schematic for a 71 60hp engine, and I don't know what you have for an ignition, but I'm sure I could find a used pack for cheap, and if not, something that could be retrofitted.

:)

Schematic, it is a battery powered CDI, with points for a trigger.

Gordon:

Hate to sound stupid (probably too late for that) Is your dollar the same as US? If not, how does it compare?

Clanton:

Never worked on one. Never seen a schematic.
Is it safe for me to presume he has 2 sets of points and a charging stator under the flywheel? No CDI charging coil? No condensers?

>Should I come up with a cheap electronic automotive retrofit, or has that been done.....
:)

Schematic,
Yes, 2 sets of points, stator under flywheel for charging battery only. There is 2/3 different packs (I think) for this engine. Engine is 3 cylinders.

Try this, 12 volt automotive coil with a ballist resistor, condenser, L77jc4 sparkplug. Should be one wire from points under flywheel, connect to - side of coil, condenser connected to -side of coil. disconnect power pack and remove, locate switched hot wire to pack, connect to resistor, from resistor to + side coil. The condenser is to reduce arcing at the points, I dont know what size condenser.
Schematic should be able to put this in schematic form.

Clanton:

This system interests me....

>Do you have a schematic on this system?
>2 sets of points.....3 cylinders?
>1 wire coming from under flywheel?
>how many coils?
>distributor?
>is there waste spark?

Now you got my interest!!

Re: 71 Johnson 60HP - Amplifier woes

Thanks Guys,

Our Oz dollar is worth half a US so a $199 pack will cost us at least $400!.
I can see how the auto coil, resister and condensor will fit but does anyone have any idea about replacing the existing pack with a CDI unit from a car?
I am pretty keen to fix this motor as it has only done 53 hours since new and runs like a clock (when it goes).

Thanks

Gordon

Gordon:

If you can supply me a diagram, or atleast answer my questions in the previous post, I will suggest a retrofit, but not until I have an understanding of the system......

Re: 71 Johnson 60HP - Amplifier woes

Details of schematic are :

3 Cylinders
1 Coil
2 sets of plugs under flywheel
Distributor under flywheel
1 Black/White wire coming from points to amplifier
1 Purple input to amplifier (12 volts)
1 Grey output wire to coil primary

Amplifier draws about 100 ma (my book says it should draw 200). There is no output voltage from the amplifier at all even when the input (black/white) wire is pulsed to earth (as mentioned as a test in my manual).

Does this help?

Re: 71 Johnson 60HP - Amplifier woes

Gordon:

While i'm waiting for clanton's diagram,

>check to see how many lobes (bumps or humps) are on the point cam. (the profile which opens the points)

I'm still puzzled why there is 2 sets of points if it has a distributor....(unless they need extended dwell for the high RPM)

I'm hoping the diagram will shed some light.

If all is as it seems, we may be able to adapt a Ford TFI module for cheap.....I'd choose that because it looks for a positive voltage to trigger, and is smart enough not to power coil if engine stopped. Thats the problem with using a conventional module from a inductive type pickup system....it would power the coil if the key was on and engine stopped with points open.....This would burn the coil in a few minutes....

Re: 71 Johnson 60HP - Amplifier woes

Thanks Clanton, Got the diagram:

>as clanton says, it would be easy to convert to a conventional ignition with a ballast resistor and a conventional coil. It would be the easiest and fastest. You will be replacing points more often, but hell, not that often.

>You could convert to an electronic system. Module will run 5-10 bucks at a wrecker. A little experimenting and away you go.....I'd only recommend this if you are a hobbyist or mechanic.

Re: 71 Johnson 60HP - Amplifier woes

I have heard of the Ford TFI module being used, but only with a magnetic trigger.

Re: 71 Johnson 60HP - Amplifier woes

I've thought this out, and believe if the points get dirty, it could misstrigger the TFI module resulting in engine damage...

Best to use a conventional coil, ballast resistor and condenser.....as clanton suggests....

Re: 71 Johnson 60HP - Amplifier woes

The Ford Duraspark 1 may have had points, in one of my old books I found a diagram for a ford transistorized system with points, the book is copywrite 1970. Back to what Trent said, rebuilt pack from Rapair, or used one.

Re: 71 Johnson 60HP - Amplifier woes

Clanton

Its easy to convert a magnetic pickup module to a point type of triggering. He would have to use the old type of ignition coil. Thats what I was trying to avoid (old style coil) But it certainly can be done. Just depends how much retrofitting he's capable of.....
